Movie Review: Plesantville

A pair of sibling teens fight over the remote and end up in the fantasy TV world where everything is black and white. Tobey Maguire stars with Reese Witherspoon as his sister. They find themselves stuck in a world where everything goes right until they start to change things, adding passion coloring the dull world.

While many films tackle the concept of prejudice in a stark unyielding way, Pleasantville takes a poignant and often humorous tack. They still show all the dark and ugly ways people act, and then contrast it with bringing out the passionate joy that comes from creating something beautiful, or learning what you truly love.

These performers showed me they have so much more going on with themselves. Joan Allen plays the pearl wearing typical 50s era mom discovering herself, contrasted against her William H. Macy who takes longer to find his passion. Jeff Daniels character on the other hand, jumps in deep with both feet. He paints the town any color he can find.

Do check out the special features on the DVD. It's so interesting how they use "green screen" with the makeup and to mix black and white with colored images. Bandon has the only copy of this fine DVD, but look for the VHS in Dora, Powers, Coos Bay, North Bend and also Bandon.
