Older Movie VHS review: The Egg and I

Some friends and I were talking about being organized and neat and I remembered what Ma Kettle said about it in this film. She said that when she was first married to Pa, she was neat as a pin. But that as time went on, his mess became too much for her to chase after. So she took on his messy ways.

There's a whole series of Ma and Pa Kettle films that I'll review if and when I get to them. In the mean time, even though it's only on VHS, please see the first time we are introduced to them.

Claudette Colbert marries Fred MacMurray and finds out he has a dream to leave his stable office job and move to the country to raise chickens. We get a view of country life from these city slickers who get way over their heads. Our Mr. Newbie Chicken Farmer starts talking egg production with a pretty blond country gal and makes the Mrs. jealous.

Pull out the VCR and have a watch. VHS copies in North Bend and Myrtle Point

OK links to every gem

So, every one of the movies I consider gems has a link to both IMDB and Amazon. I put the link right below the name of the movie on one of the posts with its Amazon graphic. I liked that so much I might do it all the time in the future.

Monday will have a new post and next weekend I'll start in on linking the "good" films. Please look through the gem list as there are some great movies on the list that looking them all over.. some I want to watch again.

Have a wonderful day.

Gem Review: Circle of Friends

Minnie Driver goes chubby for this one. She plays a young woman who grew up with two other friends in a small Ireland town. The girls go off to university and meet some charming men. Among them, Chris O'Donnell, who is struggling to become a doctor.

I consider this a gem for it's charm and deep meaning for me. It shows how people sometimes try to rise to an occasion but fail, but when they just get to the business of doing what has to be done, they succeed.

It also shows how perfection does not exist in the world. What we might think is "perfect" usually turns out to be the deepest collection of flaws. I first saw it as a double features with Muriel's Wedding. What an outstanding chick flick day.

You'll be charmed. Head to Coos Bay and North Bend for the DVD. VHS copies are in Dora, Coos Bay and Myrtle Point.

Me again....

I read earlier that a blog with associates links in ever post implied an over monetized system. My feeling is both IMDB and Amazon have information AND ads. Feel free to gripe at me if you're bothered by the frequency or content that you see.

If anyone chooses to purchase or download a film, the proceeds will go to the Coos County Library System. I wish to get a copy of Heavy Metal and one of Red Dwarf IV as I know for sure they don't have those. After that, it'd be nice to maybe get the third season of The Closer and The Muppet Show.

Tell me about any other movies, TV series or documentaries you'd love to see. I'd love to accomodate hopes and wishes. New stuff the library system purchases on a regular basis. I'm just talking older and more obscure material.

Ralph Fiennes must love dark dreary roles. His activist wife ends up dead and he sets out to figure how why she died and who killed her.

As with some dogs, I fast forwarded through much of this film. Hopelessness without some purpose makes me angry at the lazy filmmakers. I am not a fan of Feinnes and while I'm OK with Rachel Weisz who plays his wife, she wasn't in long enough to really comment on her performance.

Not my cup but lots of people liked it including the Oscar people. Weisz won for best supporting actress. Lots of DVDs available in Bandon, Coos Bay, North Bend and Myrtle Point.

Movie Review: City of Angels

Nicolas Cage plays an angel watching doctor Meg Ryan and falls in love with her. While this tries really hard to be a romantic comedy, I just couldn't get into it.

I can't quite put my finger on what didn't work for me. Angels, death and doctoring wouldn't put me off. I like Meg Ryan and Cage is OK. Just something didn't pull me into the story and keep me happy there.

Ah well, maybe you'll have better luck. The DVD can be found in Bandon, and look for VHS copies in Coquille, Coos Bay and SWOCC.

Movie Review: The Contender

Joan Allen plays a female senator who jumped parties sometime in the distant past who president Jeff Bridges nominates for vice president. The former VP died and there's a question of who to pick from two candidates.

Not as good a political triller as say something like the West Wing, but well acted and the story moved along. I enjoyed the performances by William Petersen and Gary Oldman. It was also nice to see Sam Elliott in a departure from his normal cowboy roles. Allen and Bridges got Oscar nominations their acting.

A few of the political commentary took me out of the film. People don't necessarily talk the way they do and we had a sense that there was more at stake from the beginning of the film. These points made for a ragged edge to the story. Some of the male female politics just didn't really seem accurate.

Well worth a couple hours. Look in Bandon and Powers for the DVD and North Bend, Coos Bay and Coquille for VHS copies.

Just a note

So a majority of the Gem films have Amazon links to them. Some even have a download option, thought really old films don't. If someone out there has ever used their download service, I'd like to know how it works. I just put it up for your convenience.

I'll finish up next weekend and start on the Good list. If I'm so inclined, I'll do the rest of them too. It's a lot of work. Not difficult just tedious.

I haven't mentioned it before, but the Coos Bay Library looks nice all spiffed up. I think it has a nicer flow. I like the book drop better there than at the North Bend branch. I suppose they have their reasons. I love the catalog online, bestest of all. ;)

Movie Review: Cat from Outer Space

This is just a cute Disney romp about an alien cat stranded on Earth. He finds some people to help him get his ship back and return home.

Ken Berry and Sandy Duncan star with Harry Morgan, Roddy McDowall and McLean Stevenson in supporting parts. The silliness just can't be helped.

Movie Review: Chisum

John Wayne stars as rancher John Chisum who runs a vast New Mexico spread where he raises cattle. He protects himself and other ranchers from rustlers and tries to keep the land accessible to other less fortunate cattlemen.

Chisum's nemesis, Laurence Murphy, tries to buy up all the land and drive businesses out of town. Our hero, with the help of his friends and neighbors, puts an end to Murphy's shenanigans.

I'm not a western scholar but I know elements of this story reflect real history. I just found Wayne an amazing charmer and nice performances by the rest of the cast. Grab some popcorn and spend a couple hours exploring the old west.

A Couple of Watchables

My watchables list is rather high so I'm gonna do another post with a two of them.

This documentary rates on the low scale of the watchable spectrum because it lacks meaningful connection among the speakers who show scenes of gays and lesbians on film. It's almost just a clip show without a point.

I have a lesbian friend who watches anything with lesbians in it. I get that. It's a deep desire for the familiar. I tend to think love is love and it matters little to me the orientation and choices adults make with their affections. I'm just big on content and meaning.

I wish they'd explored more the context for the film scenes instead of pointing and laughing how they got this or that past the film board. Nonetheless, it's worth a once through to pick up some interesting cultural exploration.

Head on out to the lovely Bandon Library for this DVD.

This documentary on the other hand rated higher. It tells the true story of a World War II medic who would not use a gun to kill because of his religious beliefs. He desperately wanted to serve his country as a medic and found rejection throughout his training. Ultimately the army relented and he became a hero saving dozens of men.

It's a bit difficult to understand the gentleman as he's older and ill, but the strain is worth it. I admire his convictions and perseverance. Nearly all the libraries have a copy of this DVD including: Bandon, Coos Bay, North Bend, Lakeside,Myrtle Point and Coquille.

Movie Review: Constantine

Keanu Reeves plays his typical bad guy with a heart of gold. I'm not much of a fan of this kind of mystical horror fare so I found it a waste of time.

I don't find films based on comics very entertaining either. The main character is a supernatural detective trying to solve the suicide of his client's sister. Then they fall into the world of demons and angels and ha ha ha all hell breaks loose.

Helena Bonham Carter and Aaron Eckhart star as a couple who converse with each other at a wedding. I watched the first 10 minutes or so then I just fast forwarded until I became really bored and skipped around chapters.

Here I go again ranting against the cheating nature of humans. OK. Find a way to deal, please. These trite people with their trite dialog hopping into bed and then making excuses to their spouse. BORING.

You can just see them smarming their way into bed. I put off watching this and ended up having to hold it for a weekend viewing. I say just avoid the whole thing.

Movie Review: Cold Comfort Farm

Ripe for adventure Flora accepts an invitation to the farm belonging to her distant relatives. Once there, she discovers a batch of downtrodden characters all kowtowing to the matriarch. Note the costuming and set design of the 1930s.

Flora begins lightening up everyone's lives and figures out their deepest desires and sets about helping them get it. Her youthful spirit infects everyone around her and the dreary farm becomes a place of light and celebration.

Kate Beckinsale plays Flora with Eileen Atkins, Sheila Burrell and Joanna Lumley in supporting roles.

I love Mondays. I will do a review this evening but I wanted to just do some lovin on some of you who read the blog. I do this to help people choose movies to watch from the Coos County Library System.

They have a new message forum over there. Click on the link in the upper left and check it out. The Join the online catalog steering committee forum! link is on the left of the page off main library site.

I am so grateful to the people who responded and told me I'm not just shouting in the dark. I love doing this blog.

I'm going to tinker with some of the layout. I just like the colors, even tho it has little to do with movie reviews. I think I'll see about making a nice banner for the top, but like most of my plans.. we'll just have to see how it goes.

Watchable List

Lets start with a couple films and their sequels.

The Complete Gidget Collection

These include the original theatrical release (not the TV show) with Sandra Dee in the title rule. They used other actresses for the second and third films in this set. Look for Cliff Robertson as the Big Kahuna in the first one. Though crooner James Darren appears in all of them. (He also appears in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" as Vic Fontaine.)

A tom boyish girl goes on a man hunt to the beach with her more buxom high school friends. They try and attract some surfer dudes but our tom boy just wants to play in the water. The man hunters abandon Gidget and she falls for one of the surfers.

Mostly fluff, but it's cute in its quaint way. While all three films are alright, I missed Sandra Dee in the title role. Find the DVD set of three in Myrtle Point and individually on VHS. Gidget in Coos Bay and Lakeside, Gidget Goes Hawaiian and Gidget Goes to Rome both in Lakeside.

Ron Howard directed the first one and it's the better of two. I guess the Stonecutters really did make Steve Guttenberg a star, because I can't figure out how else he's working in Hollywood. Don Ameche and Wilford Brimley made up for it I suppose.

I'm a big science fiction fan so I give the benefit of the doubt to a lot of logic errors but dang this whole plot has holes you can drive a freight train through. Oh well, it's worth a once through. Some laughs and some tears.

This old live action TV version of the Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers musical stars a young Julie Andrews. I love the song "in my own little corner," though the story is a bit rushed to fit into the musical format.

Andrews does it justice as do all of them. It's in black and white and so gets a little lower rating from me. I prefer other version of the story.

A rather sweet story of an independent woman who dearly wants to go to college and ends up running the department she works in. She falls in love with a married professor who's wife wont divorce him. While sometimes I think that kind of behavior makes the woman look cheap, the way they handle this story showed class and style.

It stars Martha Scott and many nice performances by William Gargan and her love interest Sidney Blackmer.

Look in Bandon for this black and white story of independence.

Movie Review: The Color Purple

Oh sure, I hear you say. Pick an Oscar winner for a gem, real cutting edge there, OiVey. Well, actually, I like to buck the trends. But this film, just grabbed me and tossed me around so much I just had to love it.

It's about women and their depth and their tolerance until one day they just have to make a stand and change what they think. Whoopi Goldberg stars as the matriarch of a large family with Danny Glover as her abusive husband.

Glover's Mister brings in a girlfriend called Shug played by Margaret Avery. Goldberg's Celie finds herself enamored of the woman and they begin an affair.

Director Steven Spielberg gets an outstanding performance that wins Oprah Winfrey a best supporting actress nomination. Winfrey herself speaks often of how deeply she felt the material and loved playing the part of the determined Sofia.

The tragic sadness that permeates the film can be a downer, yet I love how the women sort it through and blossom. Bring a box of tissues, you're gonna need it.

Many copes both in VHS and DVD format available across the entire library system. VHS at SWOCC, North Bend, Coquille, Myrtle Point, Powers and Lakeside. DVDs in Bandon, North Bend and SWOCC.

Movie Review: Charlotte's Web

Charlotte's Web

I love this story. I have dreamy fond memories of our librarian reading it to us in third grade. This live action version with CGI animals just didn't measure up.

Dakota Fanning plays Fern the real live girl who saves Wilbur from the breakfast plate. Julia Roberts voices Charlotte with Steve Buscemi, as Templeton the rat, Oprah Winfrey as Gussy the Goose and John Cleese as a sheep.

You'd think with such an esteemed cast and wonderful story, it'd just work. Alas the jokes fall flat and the story looks like a cartoon. Might as well see the older cartoon.

Movie Review: Commando's

A few months back, I reviewed a couple of films that were spaghetti westerns. I guess we can call this one a spaghetti war movie. At least the unit is supposed to be Italian so it makes sense to have it done there.

Lee Van Cleef stars as an angry second in command of a unit that's sent to overtake a water oasis from a band of Italian soldiers. Naturally things get hairy when the Americans find a group of German soldiers partying at the watering hole.

Movies that mix the point of view tend to lose focus quick. I'm not sure why we need to know the Germans in a camp not far away are thoughtful and intelligent, but we learn one of them is a professor. I guess it's supposed to figure in the ending, but it kind of just confuses the viewer.

I've seen Twilight Zone episodes that covered the subject and made the point better. North Bend and Bandon have this film alone on DVD. Though it's also in a collection of war films at those locations and in Coos Bay too.

Movie Review: Condition Red

A violent prison guard beats up some male prisoners so in their infinite wisdom they shift him to the women's section. Supposedly based on a true story, the guard just can't seem to get his act together outside either.

A nice neighbor lady friend tries to catch his eye but he just ignores her. He starts hooking up with a pretty girl at the prison and they sneak around and get it on. She tells him she's pregnant and he decides it's a good idea to break her out of prison.

I watched most of it in fast forward so I wouldn't suffer so much lameness. It had all the look and feel of a made for TV movie.Look in Bandon if something about the DVD might interest you.

Movie Review: The Conformist

The long slow plot kept this film out of the gem category, but the look and acting pushed it up from just watchable. Made in 1970, Bernardo Bertolucci, stretched the boundaries of style as he tells a story of one man's tragic life.

As the story unfolds we see an Italian fascist who finds himself trying to fit in so he agrees to marry a girl beneath him in status. He gets deeper into the "party business" when he's asked to go to Paris and kill his former philosophy professor.

While I watched it in the dubbed English, do watch the Italian if you can handle the subtitles. I watched a few scenes and film flows much better in its original language. Also check out the special features where you get to see more about the beautiful cinematography.

Whois this blog for anyway...

I'm pretty sure I have zero readers from the Coos Bay area. My fault for not getting the word out. So who am I doing this for? Well me.

I test all kinds of things in here. I test the Amazon widgets and Google's Adsense program and I guess I should start testing the site driving kinds of programs too.

Honestly, it's a bit overwhelming. I like doing the writing and the movie watching part. I like finding some little tidbit on IMDB that I didn't know before. I like making Amazon pop out little data windows on the blog.

There's an Amazon program to allow people to download DVDs and TV shows now. I'm trying to figure out how to make a page that will take people directly to that option without doing the link over and over again every day. It's not that it takes that much time, but it's a giant pain.

Maybe there's some ad on software that'd do it, I just haven't looked. One option I'm considering is an aStore with Amazon. Then I can just put one link in the blog.

So this is what I'm thinking about and what I wanted to talk about. I'll do a review later today.

A collection of Watchable Reviews

As I said on Sunday, I'd make up for being lazy on the weekend with a post with extra films. The collections have some films that are less than watchable but at least some of the elements held my interest. I'll start with the shortest and just go from there.

At just over five minutes this short film won awards for it's sweet story and well done animation. I dig all the science fiction references and appreciate the lookin out for the little guy angle. I want to laugh more and therefore put the rating lower than other people might find it. Feel free to disagree and comment below.

This series of vignettes all feature people around a table with the items in the title. I especially liked the guy and girl talking about Tesla. Murry loved the bit with
Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan discuss which one of them has more status. This film features a who's who of amazing people. Including: Roberto Benigni, Steven Wright, Steve Buscemi, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Cate Blanchett, RZA, Bill Murray and others.

And Jim Jarmusch wrote and directed this whole thing. I'm just tired writing it all out.

Movie Review: Collateral

This amazing performance by Jamie Foxx got him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. Some say Tom Cruise deserved a nod for his rule, but I disagree. I didn't see the depth that Foxx gave.

A cabbie stumbles into a murder plot and tries to negotiate for his and other people's lives. There's a girl, Jada Pinkett Smith, who ends up being Cruse's character's ultimate target.

I think it really shows the difficulties when dealing with a sociopathic personality. I enjoyed watching the cab driver maintain his goodness throughout the film. He just keeps trying to do the right thing and keep his life.

3 Good Older Films

Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas play a fluff news reporter and camera man who stumble upon a problem with a nuclear power plant. Jack Lemmon gives an outstanding performance of the somewhat crazed plant supervisor.

This shows how badly things can go wrong when the fox of industry guards its own hen house. Fonda's character wants a chance at a real news story and she finds herself inside the control room when a dangerous accident happens.

Sure the point was to scare people, but I think the real lesson shows how dangerous it is when companies prevent outside independent inspections.

This film tells the true story of the country singer's upbringing, motherhood and career rise. Exploring how she gets addicted to drugs and finds her way out of it.

Movie Review: Casanova

The late Heath Ledger appears much older than he is. I wonder if he somehow knew he wasn't long for this world and lived hard?

I enjoyed this film, yet the rating reflects far too much convulsions and shenanigans to keep track of. Casanova gets captured misbehaving and authorities force him to select one woman and settle himself down. He picks a girl who is loved by someone else.

Lots of people are mistaken for others in this particular story. Sienna Miller plays a girl writing philosophical pamphlets under an assumed name. Casanova stumbles upon her secret and falls in love. He's promised to another, of course. Swordplay ensues.

Lots of humor and plenty to see. Look to Bandon for the DVD.

TV series Review: The Closer

While not quite "just another cop show, " this series held my interest from day one. I selected the whole series and watched them over the course of two weeks. I would spread them out a bit more, but it's darn good to keep my attention for that long.

Kyra Sedgwick plays a southern belle turned lead LA detective in the Priority Murder Squad. Yes, you got it.... the PMS. Sexist overtones aside, Sedgwick takes charge fairly well. The character's wonderful flaws and charm disarm many a suspects and colleague.

She's not one to play politics and her messy relationships with men from her past color her judgment. Her constant "thank yew" tends to imply an insult or at best a backhanded compliment. I think the program got better and better as it went on.

Review: Comedy Club Shoot-Out

Comedy Club Shoot-Out
Volume I and II

A few months back I reviewed the three DVDs of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour (click for review) and they were outstanding worth a look see. These shoot outs didn't really do it for me. It's kinda interesting seeing these comics as young men doing their thing, but the routines fell flat.

I think they needed to do more than a couple minutes each. They just seemed to cut them off in the middle too. The transitions where they announced the name of the comic sounded like it was an infomercial. Take a pass and watch something else.

Bandon library has both disks.

The IMDB only had this on it but it's not very informative.
