Movie Review: Along Came Polly

Felix Unger meets Agnes Madison. A stogy control freak (Ben Stiller) finds himself abandoned by his wife (Debra Messing) on their honeymoon. When he returns home to sort through his feelings he meets an old school pal, Polly (Jennifer Aniston), who throws off all his neatnick ways.

OK, this film simply has too much of a yuck factor with me. I don't care about these people enough to watch them slime around. Might be worth it for a couple minutes of Hank Azaria, who I think is a genius, but he isn't on screen long enough to really make this film worth anything.

Movie Review: Bullitt

I really get Steve McQueen's appeal from a film like this. I enjoyed this old school cop thriller. It's fun to look at the old cars, hairstyles and dress. I liked that they just had scenes around San Francisco without rubbing our face in it. Great chases with lots of flying cars and dust ups.

It's strange how refreshing it is to see people die without all the blood and guts spilling everywhere. I just realized that I liked this film so much I forgot to vary my reviews from day to day. I'm writing this Gem, right after yesterday's. Oh well, you will just have to cope!

Television Mini-Series: Broken Trail

Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church charm as uncle and nephew cow pokes who try and make their fortune driving horses across western states. Along the way they find a group of Chinese slave would-be prostitutes to rescue. This rough and tumble wild west story takes us on a ride into a world seldom told about the west. We learn how the Chinese were exploited and abused.

I enjoyed it from start to finish, however, sometimes it tried to do too much. Like when they came upon some native Americans who charged them to trail across their lands. The scene felt a little "obligatory Indian scene here."

Spend an evening enjoying this mini. Look for it in in Bandon, Dora and Myrtle Point.

Movie Review: Flags of Our Fathers

Clint Eastwood's directing style and choice of subject tends toward gritty reality. Much of the film appears black and white as I guess a statement on the muddied plot and memories of the men.

It tells the story of the guys who raised the flag in the famous photo on Iwo Jima. They did not fair well as publicity icons, but their story helped inspire Americans to buy bonds. This film theaches that all politics is perception.

I think it's an important lesson to see, but I just wonder if we really need more war movies. I never want to see this film again. I hope Clint will forgive me.

Movie Review: Life as a House

This almost made my gem list, but just a few aspects of the story fell short. It's quite well acted by Kevin Kline and Kristin Scott Thomas and we get to see Mary Steenburgen's naked behind heh. A divorced dad with cancer spends time with his son over a summer building his dream house. The million sub plots of sleeping around high schoolers, ex-spouses and even a March December romance do relate to the main story. So what if it's all terribly convoluted.

I did enjoy the conversations about a well built house, made with quality and style. Look for this film on VHS in Coquille and North Bend and DVD in North Bend and Bandon.

Random Soso Movies

You'd think with this great cast this would be a very good movie, sadly, it suffers from a convoluted plot and what I can only imagine were crucial scene cuts. World War II German paratroopers and an Irish spy sneak across into England to assassinate Churchill. We see too much back story for paratroop commander Michael Caine, but not enough explain as to why Donald Sutherland falls in love with a Brit gal. Find Robert Duvall, I challenge you.

Another WWII epic from the '70s. I THINK the main theme of this film is how the brits are deeply bureaucratic. Seems sad to waste so much celluloid on such crap. Some nice scenes with Anthony Hopkins and Gene Hackman, though they're terribly underutilized.

Tommy Lee Jones plays a bored priest who sees a man die and searches for meaning in his calm passing. In the process he meets a girl and falls for her. The flawed script and made for tv production values detract from enjoying it. I'm not sure what the ending meant. I would prefer a clearer outcome and some reason for all the elements.

This strange film about a misfit high school kid left me wondering what the heck was going on. My husband Murry liked the weird story and the talented dancing the very oddball Napoleon did toward the end of the film. I like quirk with a purpose. Maybe the set up just didn't fit my demographic.

High school filmnoir. Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Brendon finds his ex-girlfriend dead in a culvert and sets about to find her killer. The code language, dark colors and mafioso plot contrasts starkly to the clean young faces playing these rules. I didn't get to the point of suspension of disbelief.

Movie Review: Brokeback Mountain

I had this film sitting in the DVD player when Heath Ledger passed away. I'm shocked that such a young man died so early.

Maybe my expectations were too high. All those Oscar nominations lulled me into thinking this would be a great film. I don't know why, I dislike many winning films. Both Jake Gyllenhaal and Ledger deserved their nods.

It does have a nice look, and the characters were quite believable in their collection of flaws. The scenery makes couch potato me want to go camping. Though I wish it was a bit lighter and brighter.

As men these two characters leave a lot to be desired. It has nothing to do with their gayness. I had issue with them as people. One keeps dropping his children off on his beleaguered wife and the other dreams away his life. I know they could not live as a couple in rural America. Maybe that's the whole point. I just object to feeling sorry for cheaters who profess love. Either they want to be a loving couple in secret or they want to have random sex with strangers.

Lots of libraries have copies. Check out Bandon, Myrtle Point, North Bend and Coquille.

Minseries Review: The Brontes of Haworth

The historical significance of this collection may be one reason to watch it, but I think one would be better off reading a book on the Bronte sisters. I love historical drama in general and I watch with delight many of the Masterpiece Theater programs on PBS. This just fell flat in set design, acting, and story.

It seemed as though it was in black and white and dreary. Maybe that's the point, as these women died young and childless.

Still got a hangerking for this british miniseries? Bandon has the DVD.

Movie Review: Shrek 1 2 and 3

In this first of this series we are taught a moral tale but don't mind so much. Mike Myers completely delights voicing the grumpy green ogre to the foil of Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz. They hold their own in this verbal fencing match where we're lead by an unlikely hero, on a fractured fairy tale. Let us all accept the ogre inside and live happy ever after.

This one told a different story of teaching a young man to accept his responsibilities, but again, it fell short of the first. Nothing stood out and I pretty much yawned through it. Stuff and Nonsense

I want to post a review of a gem I've seen, but I haven't seen any lately. I'll review something on Monday. This weekend I'm taking a bit of a break.

I'd mentioned I'm adding some small ads to the blog, but I have to do that manually as the interface is giving me trouble. They'll be quite small and unobtrusive. I hope.

I'm moving into a new office here in the house. That's making life a little stressful. I decided to wait on the flyer for the library.

OK Type at you later.

Movie Review: Her Majesty Mrs. Brown

Billy Connolly normally makes me laugh so hard I almost wet myself. This rule is a dramatic departure from his comic ways. He plays a Scottish servant who pushes Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) into feeling alive again. The advertising from the theater release implied a relationship between Brown and the queen, but that never materialized. Her majesty came to rely on the Scotsman as a companion of thought and reason, rather than a lover.

Dench got an Oscar nomination for her role. While I agree she deserved it, I wish someone had nominated Connolly as well. It's a bit dreary and convoluted toward the end.

Take a walk down historic lane and head out to Bandon for the DVD. North Bend, Lakeside and Coquille all have VHS copies.

Movie Review: Broken Arrow

Be aware there is an old James Stewart western of the same name on VHS. This review is for the 1996 John Travolta, Christian Slater military atomic thriller. Travolta steals a pair nuclear warheads and tries to sell them on the open market. A female park ranger, Samantha Mathis, helps try and stop him.

Lots of action and plot twists. I suspect a strong suspension of disbelieve is necessary to truly enjoy this film. It's just fun eye candy for a couple hours of your time.

Movie Review: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Bill Murray plays an oceanographer bent on destroying the mythical shark that killed his partner. This farce just barely qualifies as comedy. It just didn't raise to any level to make me laugh or care about the characters. The only reason I'm giving it a rating above dog is because my husband Murry liked it.

Movie Review: Dog List

These are all relationship dramas, beyond that they have little in common.

Meryl Streep has an amazing ability to transform herself into just about anyone and in this role she is almost unrecognizable as the bored and lonely housewife Francesca. Possibly different casting for the Clint Eastwood rule may have saved the film. His wooden style and rugged looks detract in this context.

Playboy Don Johnston (Bill Murray) gets a letter from one of the many women from his past telling him he has a 20 year old son. When he tells his friend Winston this, the neighbor sets out to find the woman who sent the note. All this film showed me was Johnston is a scoundrel and cad who broke hearts right and left. I guess maybe it's supposed to be funny, but I could care less what happens to him.

It's good in life to help people, and Clive Owen plays a doctor trying to do that, but it REALLY falls short when we see him move around the world. That's just plain stupid. Most aid workers pick a problem and spend their lives working on it. A rich socialite played by Angelina Jolie, falls for the do-gooder doctor and chases him around the world. It fails on the social commentary, on the love story and on the general movie going experience.

The wealthy family, especially the older brother Lunus (Humphrey Bogart), objects and tries to prevent the union.

Her beau gets injured at a party and his older brother swoops in to distract her from her attachment to his brother. Older brother and chauffeurs daughter fall in love, but Linus does not how to love a sweet young woman. Movie Review: Grizzly Falls

I am no biologist and I have no direct knowledge of bears, yet I find much of what this portrays extremely scary. It implies a humanity to these wild creatures that could possibly hurt someone if they took it to heart. I hope adults would share with their children how much "movie reality" contrasts with the real world.

Ok, beyond that, the story has some issues. There's some Richard Harris scenes and voice overs that just detract from the story. I'm not sure if it's bad casting or bad writing. I suspect both. The actors, including the bear, seemed to be doing as over the top caricatures of who they were supposed to be.

The plot involves a grizzly who "kidnaps" a boy and takes him on a trip to retrieve her cubs. His father chases after them. Just writing this out makes me like the movie less. It IS simple and yet complex.

Look to Bandon for a viewing.

VHS Moive Rview: Team America: World Police

MPAA rating: R; for graphic, crude & sexual humor, violent images & strong language - all involving puppets - taken directly form the library site. This film offends more people than Fritz the Cat and that got an X rating. I knew it would be like that, it's done by the "South Park" guys Trey Parker and Matt Stone. To call them irreverent does a disservice to the word. They think up the weirdest stuff that a 12 year old kid would and put it on film.

Though I have never seen a complete episode, the film is modeled after the Gerry Anderson series "Thunderbirds." They featured puppets going on adventures saving the planet.. Team America parodies the older series to absurd ends. In an attempt to kill the terrorists, Team America manages to destroy the landmarks the bad guys are trying to blow up. Plenty of politics and swear words to last a lifetime. I fast forwarded through the puppet sex scene and that made it even funnier.

For grown ups who can handle this kind of childish stunts, this will make you laugh and spill your popcorn. Coos Bay has the only VHS copy.

Movie Review: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Quite a lot of this film confused me. Oh, I got the science fictiony plot point of having experiences erased from one's brain, I just found the relationship between these people weird in the first place. Maybe it's a little overwhelming when Kate Winslet plays the more out of control character to a calmer Jim Carrey. That HAS to be an absurd universe.

Soso List: Bridge Movies

Not another list post I hear you groan. Yes! heh I have a backlog of films that just don't deserve a full page for themselves. Mostly because they're old and mediocre.

Lets start with the "bridge" grouping.

I'm sure the filmmakers thought they were creating a masterpiece, unfortunately for us, it just drags on. Not even the fine talents of this outstanding cast could save this snoozer. Without these folks, I'd call it a dog: F. Murray Abraham, Kathy Bates, Gabriel Byrne and Robert De Niro.

Library: Bandon

IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0356443/

This World War II slogger follows a group fo over worked soldiers toward a German held bridge. The small stories of man's degenerating under stress held some of my interest, but oeverall, I'd pass on selecting this film. Instead try my review of The Black Brigade.

Library: Myrtle Point

IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064110/

This Korean War film stars William Holden and Grace Kelly who sadly do little to entertain us. Oh, I forgot Mickey Rooney is in it too. It's a super rah rah Navy film about military sacrifice. Plenty of better acted and presented films that cover the same topic.

Library: Bandon

IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046806/

I thought this had an after school special kind of feel and I see it was made for WonderWorks so now that makes perfect sense. A 10 year old boy meets a new neighbor girl with some strange ideas. She helps him expand his concept of friendship. It's very slow and pointless. Perhaps the 2007 version is better, but the library only has the 1985 version..

Movies Review: The Devil Wears Prada

The Borg got nothin on the fashionistas! A talented, yet unstylish woman gets sucked into the fashion world when she applies for a job as a second assistant to a magazine editor. As time goes on, she learns to dress as snappy as those around her and her work ethic earns her boss's respect.

Meryl Streep throws her whole body into every role and this is no exception. It's clear Anne Hathaway can hold her own against such a powerhouse. All I can say is Stanley Tucci makes a good plot pawn. He really didn't add to the momentum of the story. He could have been a cardboard cut out and still been effective.

I guess the library expected this to be a popular film. Bandon and Coos Bay both have two copies. Plus Myrtle Point and Dora each have a copy.

Movie Review: Brazil

Those who recommended that I see this film said I'd either hate or love it. Just to be defiant, I gotta say, I loved AND hated it. It's a tale of a weird rigid bureaucratic society that suffers from so many rules and regulations so nothing ever gets done. A man who works in a department where he's the only competent worker tries to fix a problem where a man was "arrested" by mistake.

The terrorist elements and ridiculous society make an amazing statement about current conditions in the United States. I wouldn't know about Britain, but it's a common theme in their literature and film. Even a small rule for Robert De Niro lends a nice element to the first 90% of the film. I'll not spoil, lets just say the "hate" part for me comes at the end.

Brazil can be found in Bandon.

Movie Review: Suicide Kings

Sometimes Murry selects a film that we haven't heard anything about. He picked this one from the fine cast. Christopher Walken as an aging mobster and Denis Leary as his driver lend a professional air. Four friends kidnap a well known mafioso in order to pay ransom for one of the young men's sister.

The director kept the violence to a reasonable minimum for the plot. Walken's character manipulates the rather naive kidnappers and the plot twists maze us through a story where we're not really sure what will happen.

Spend a couple hours with this intriguing story. Look in Coos Bay.

Television Series Rview: The Muppet Show Season One

This classic 1976 Frank Oz and Jim Henson show will charm your whole family. I do have some minor annoyances that have more to do with the time this was produced than anything. The guest "stars" are b-list as best and some of the jokes related to them are quite dated. I love most of the muppet driven scenes and I'm especially fond of Sweetums, the giant monster muppet, Animal the drummer and Floyd Pepper.

Pick up the complete first season in North Bend. Many other libraries have VHS copies of best of and lots of the movies.

Thoughts 2008

Okay, I decided not to make an archive post of the Soso and Dog lists. I figure if readers want to view the movies I don't like very much, they can click the labels and see what's up. Also, I got a reply from the library about posting a flyer. So what if it's two months later, heh.

I am considering adding some advertising to the blog. I was thinking that it might be a distraction, but then I realized, IMDB has tons of ads everywhere. Another blog I read has many small ads, I think I'll do a couple in a couple spots and see how it goes.

Please reply if you have any comments. I'd like to hear from people in Oregon, specifically in Coos County, but all are welcome to comment.

New review post today too. WOO

2. Guest reviewers a few times a month.
3. More comments and interaction with all you lovely lurking readers.

The Coos County Library System changed over to a new password based login and it's been causing some problems. I used to be able to select movies alphabetical, which was totally interesting because I'd run across some amazing films I hadn't heard anything about. I was just holding anything that piqued my interest. I am sure soon they'll get it back in order. In the mean time, I might be selecting movies a lot more randomly. I still have a list of about 20 that I haven't yet reviewed.

Later today I'll post a list of all the movies I reviewed in 2007. Have a great new year!
