DVD Title Fatal Force:

These two bad boring films really didn't impress me. Lets start with the poor quality of the DVD and the fact that they failed to connect the two films.

Death Merchants involves Israel and Palestinian intrigue where the wrong man is lured into a trap by a beautiful woman. Terrorism = bad mmkay? Though we do have Jason Robards. Pity he didn't add any class to this film.

Deadly Recruits had something to do with murder and cults in the UK, but for the life of me I could not figure out what was going on. Just leave the disk on the shelf.

Death comedies really need something in order to be good. This didn't have "it." I do like Hank Azaria, but to call these people dysfunctional would insult the term. Everyone seems to fight over past resentments and all the stress makes the matriarch and new widow want to kill herself. I strongly suggest you avoid this lame duck.

An advertising agency puts subliminal messages in advertising for an election winning a victory for their client. When his best friend dies, executive Lee Majors, finds out what's going on and tries to stop his boss. Robert Mitchum and Valerie Perrine also star.

Not only was the plot, script and acting poor, but the quality of the sound and images detracted from the film. With more than a grade school effort, the film makers could have explored the topic in an interesting way. Instead, they seemed to mock the concept of subliminal advertising with their stupid ads and ridiculous plot.

I watched this film before and I may have posted a review. It somehow got lost off my list though. If you see it, leave a comment with the URL.

Dog Thursday

This felt like a lame and slow Jane Austin novel. Some relatives of an American family arrive and insinuate themselves into the local society. We're never sure if they are conning the family or if they're real. I had to catch myself before I nodded off. Leave it on the library shelf.

This tale of a family filled with drama lost me from the start. The poor translations and sound dubbing distracted, but I don't understand why it's titled for the children, or who's point of view I'm supposed to focus on.

Famed director Ingmar Bergman made this toward the end of his life. For huge fans of foreign language and or the director, view it in the original language and leave a comment. I'd like to understand what all the praise is about.

So bad I chose not to watch more than the first five minutes. Send a comment if you want to write a review. I can't believe I checked it out twice. If I reviewed this before, I can't find it on the site. Look for Lorenzo Lamas if you want to see it.

I can't believe this badly made flick has more than one copy at the library. I've made no bones about disliking cheaters and mobsters and here we have both. This character works for the mob when he wants, but he's always up in people's face about what's right and it's no surprise he hardly gets anywhere in the organization. He cheats on his girl too.

This features very early Joe Pesci work and I figure someone thought he was worth watching. The main character collects debts for his mobster overlords, but we're not sure why they put up with his attitude. Avoid.

Chalk this one up as a badly titled film. The quake had little do do with the plot, I guess they just wanted to capitalize on the idea. An undercover cop, Traci Lords, gets pulled off an assignment to transport a mobster and finds out she's being set up.

Lots of explosions and special effects wasted on this crappy plot. Lords can do a good job, but they didn't give her anything decent to say.

Thursday Dog Pile

Because I missed last week's Dog post I am tacking on a couple extras. You will NOT enjoy these films.

I know I've seen this film before, but I haven't review it and I don't know why not. A drunk starts to talk to a preacher who tells him that God will make everything better. Terrible production values mixed with stupid plot just made this confusing and AWFUL.

Good people don't always make a good film. This follows the lives of a bunch of degenerate gamblers and how they get themselves in over their heads. Lots of death and mayhem.

Here's a part list of who's in it: Danny DeVito, Forest Whitaker, Kim Basinger, Kelsey Grammer and Ray Liotta. Some of them use their talents well in this film, but they couldn't begin to make it entertaining. If you want to see something interesting about gambling, watch The Cooler.

I've seen better acting in a high school play. Just don't even bother. This is what the library entry says: Two reporters from a college newspaper track down a forgotten California town, only to find it inhabited by murderous zombies. Maybe I need to invent a "Dead Dog" category just for crap like this.

I cannot begin to tell you how deeply this film offended me. Matt Dillon plays a man who supposedly wants to write, but along the way he screws over employers, women and friends. He drinks and gambles too much and hits his degenerate drunk girlfriend. Marisa Tomei needs to find another decent part someday. AVOID.

Memo: if they say "that was impossible," after a big stunt, turn off the film. Cindy Crawford and William Baldwin star in this clunker about a Russian mobster trying to kill a pretty lawyer. She stumbled upon the existence of an asset for a client, a boat the mafia guy was using to make a heist, and nearly dies for her efficiency.

Baldwin plays a cop who tries to protect her. Look for a cameo of Salma Hayek as his hot tempered Latina girlfriend. Or better yet, don't. Even the stunts don't save this poorly written and acted mess.

Michael Douglas can act and he does convince me he's this guy, but I just couldn't grasp the point of the film. We're really not given an idea of what his stress points are that make him so crazy as to go on a rampage after being stuck in traffic. It just seemed all random and erratic. I want a setup and then an evaluation by a cop or counselor or someone.

Kiddie Dogs

Definitely for kiddies, I hated this so much. Too much flash and fast speak to understand the words. Maybe little kids would like it but I don't know. A 10-year-old boy with working parents makes wishes and gets fairy godparents who take care of him. I got bored and switched it off after that.

More like the extreme adventures of stupid Dave. Where Jim Varney's Ernest P. Worrell character charms with his ridiculous antics Super Dave Osborne bores me to tears.

I don't like how he crashes through everything and doesn't seem to suffer any consequences. One moment of almost funny when blind Ray Charles drives a bus through the streets of Las Vegas, but nothing can make up for all the terrible acting and dumb plot. Use your judgement, but I wouldn't let my kids or grandkids watch this.

Random Unrelated Dogs

They just jump right into this film without sharing with us the back story about these guys. We aren't taught to see them as interesting people so we don't know to cheer or boo at their misfortunes.

Dean Cain never was much of an actor, same with Andy Dick or Luke Wilson. I know Drew Barrymore has the ability to do a good job, but this script left her with nothing to do. Take a pass on this puppy.

Weird Dog Day

On its face the title might clue in to its badness. We meet a couple of guys who don't like gayness but they're clearly into each other. One sells his services for pints of beer and money at a gay bar. The men they sell themselves to start showing up dead and they try and solved the plot. It tries too hard to be "funny" just comes off as stupid, creepy and offensive. Much better films about alternative lifestyles.

Ed Wood Box Set

All these came from the Ed Wood Box Set found in Bandon and North Bend. If you want to put a hold on them, you'll have to have a clerk do it for you. They're all TERRIBLE films, but it's interesting to see Bela Lugosi in his later years. From some of his early films that I reviewed a few weeks ago, it wasn't that much of a stretch to see him in an Ed Wood production. He's no Barrymore. He might have been able to hold his own with a decent script or director. Hollywood abandoned him.

A crooked conman tries to bilk rich people with fake ghosties of their dear departed, but it turns out he truly did raise the dead. Sadly, my plot summery makes it sound interesting, but it's so not.

A police detective comes by to investigate mysterious goings on and pokes around the haunted old house. he meets the new owner, Dr Acula, (groan) who invites him to a seance. The cop discovers secret doors within the meeting room and goes exploring.

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0156843/

Amazon: See Below

This almost might be in a different category because it WAS somewhat interesting hearing the story of Ed Wood from the people involved, but I think they could have done a better job with the material. They could have asked different more probing questions and found out more about why Lugosi's son thought so little of Wood.

I'm glad to know that some people tried to encourage Wood to try more to make a better picture. It's clear he lived in his own world and followed his own impatient plan. He didn't have the talent he thought he did, but he was quite an interesting guy.

IMDB says that this film gives the reasons a film like Plan 9 from Outer Space could be made. I don't agree. I think it gives insight into Wood, but not really how and why he was the way he was.

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113270/

Amazon: See Below

I didn't think there could be a rating below dog. There was absolutely no reason to have Bela Lugosi in this film. My only guess is Wood thought he was super cool.

The topic of transvestitism might make an interesting film, but not in the hands of Ed Wood. Two different men are exemplified in the film, one who we only see bits and pieces of through flashback, the other, is Edward D. Wood Jr. himself as the title Glen/Glenda.

We see a psychiatrist speak to a police detective about the behavior of men dressing as women. I'm sure much of the conversation reflects the moral outrage of the time, but some of the conclusions are a little naive. I think it was even worse than Plan 9.

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045826/
.

Yet another film in search of a plot. The title didn't fit the story. The "bride" and the "monster" didn't relate at all. Bela Lugosi at least had a character to play that made sense, sort of.

A scientist guy tries to make atomic super men and he's tried and failed with several so far. He feeds his failures to a giant squid. A girl newspaper reporter happens upon the goings on and gets herself mesmerized by Lugosi's character. Because everyone knows they teach scientists to mesmerize women their first year. (eyeroll)

Yet another Three Dog Night

The makers billed as a prequel to the famous Exorcist film about demonic possession of a little girl. Just after World War II a priest goes to an African town to retrieve a demonic artifact. He finds a long abandoned church there and local stories of evil goings on.

This depicts typical horror stuff with death and destruction from mystic forces we aren't meant to understand. I had a tough time following the story really. It made little sense to me. Plus these faith based scary things don't really mean anything to me.

Not Much to Sing About for this Three Dog Night

I skimmed this documentary about Iraq. The biggest problem were the subtitles, but even just watching the images, I couldn't recommend it. First, it's a changing, uncertain environment. What and who we see may no longer exist in a country just a few short years from major combat operations. Second, it lacked a cohesive point for the program. Watch for news productions of current conditions.

People on IMDB loved it so take that for what you will.

This documentary explores the idea of flying saucers at Area 51 in the Nevada desert. I'm a big science fiction fan and you might think I like this stuff but you would be wrong. I think it's kinda silly. Plus, really this program didn't make any compelling arguments. I wish there were real evidence of something happening, I'm just of the mind that the likelihood is so slim as to make these people seem laughable.

Again, IMDB folks disagree.

I'm so sorry I don't like thinking of people in the ways I thought of these folks. These have to be the dumbest people on the planet. John Force and his daughters drive drag racing cars and they evidently make enough money to keep doing it. While I like the idea of race chicks, this series depicts every one of his family members in a bad light. Dad's the biggest dufus of all.

Scary Dogs

Movies based on first person shooters rarely create a plot to hold someone's interest and this is no exception. Dwayne Johnson aka "the Rock" stars as the leader of a military team that has to travel to Mars to clean up a science station that's gone terribly wrong. I had some hope it might be interesting with the spacey science fiction bits but alas, it's just a typical horror flick. Don't bother.

With a cast like Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins and Keanu Reeves, what could possibly go wrong? Darn near everything. I found it campy without the funny part. The ole vamp himself looked like a bad drag queen act and Rider's acting made me want to throw stuff at the screen.

This DVD had two seemingly unrelated films on it. I don't know what if anything connects them. Shark features Burt Reynolds as an arms smuggler stuck in an African sea port who discovers sunken treasure. He hooks up with a marine researcher to haul it up. But the researcher betrays him.

The violence within The Last Hour just made me dislike it's stupid antics. Shark might have earned a soso had this bad dog not been on the disk. Mafia plot mixed with TERRIBLE acting just made it a fast forward wonder. Avoid at all costs.

Three Dog Night

I find Kevin Kline quite a fine actor and maybe he even was within this film. I just couldn't' get past how slow the plot moved along. I've heard that people love this film. Maybe it's a guy thing, but I found it lame. A bunch of college buddies try to hold on to their past as grown-up life catches up to them. I guess I didn't like how women were a big pain to these guy's thinking. Not big on sexist banter.

Some years ago this strange little cartoon appeared on the scene, it features three kindergarten girls with special powers. I never much cared for it, but I saw the film on the list so I thought I'd see if I'd changed my mind. Nope.

I think it's probably bad for kids as well as annoying. In one episode the girls beg the teacher to beat up the bad guys. Sends a bad message to little kids and wouldn't entertain mom and dad. Avoid.

Hhaha I look at the IMDB rating as I'm posting and this is the first time I'm matched virtually exactly with them. A tattooed militia group gets it in their head a NASA satellite system is intended to track them so they take it over and try and blow it up. I wish it were more complicated but there it is. Cuba Gooding Jr. stars as a corrupt bought and paid for cop who along with his partner ends up in trouble. The flashing around doesn't work for me in this. I'd like a story to coordinate and work showing me events. This plays all kinds of tricks that are revealed at the end.

A Number of Dogs

I can't believe I actually saw this in a theater way back when. They try and make light of the serious topic of the possible Japanese attack brought to the mainland after Pearl Harbor.

I'm not really much of a fan of John Belushi and frankly I think Dan Aykroyd became much better after the two of them parted. Director Steven Spielberg lost a bit of respect for this one. Thankfully he gained it back with others.

This convoluted story of murder and mayhem in the course of an evening left me cold. It tells a series of events around the time of night. Sean Penn takes a lot of risks as an actor. I admire him for that, but I think this one failed to pan out. I don't think the plot device of out of order scenes and flashing forward and back worked for this film.

Characters come together in strange and odd ways. There's a lot of cheating the system and violence from people you may not expect to be violent. I just think it's trying to be spiritual. I believe in people and if they try and change sincerely, I want to see them make it. I don't want so much gritty reality in my movie going experience.
