Movie Review: Chrystal

As promised I'm doing a second review today.

Please do not let your kids watch this film. The adult themes tend to leave me a little shaken, and yet I found it deeply compelling. Chrystal broke her neck in a terrible accident that also caused the death, well probably, of her son and injured her husband.

We see her tragic life unfold 20 years later when her husband returns home from prison. It's clear they're both damaged and walking wounded. Billy Bob Thornton plays the husband Joe and Lisa Blount is Chrystal.

What really interested me was the unexpected turns this tale took. It truly indicts people who use drugs by showing all the long term consequences. Some things are left unresolved and convoluted. That kind of realistic yet ethereal quality held my interest even when I wanted to turn away.

Bandon and Coos Bay both have copies, but if you're in town, try the Coos Bay copy as the Bandon has many scratches.

Movie Review: A Cinderella Story

I'm sure an teen into Hilary Duff will just love this take on the classic fairy tale. It's quite charming and sweet. Kind of a teen version of You've Got Mail.

The part of the wicket step-mother played to the nines by Jennifer Coolidge made me laugh at her campy silliness. Chad Michael Murray IS prince charming.

Considering how many bad films I watch, this made a nice distraction. I have a favorite Cinderella story that I'll save for a later review. Yes, it's total fluff and I'm good with that.

Pick up the VHS in Dora and the DVD in Myrtle Point, Coos Bay and Coquille.

Movie Review: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Please, someone stop Brad Pitt. I think he must be angling for an Oscar or something. A few years ago (and a few reviews ago) the stinker Babel left me going yawn and now this.

If 3:10 to Yuma stood out as a harrowing tale of outlaws of the old west, this film showed the story of Jesse James last few years. They make the criminal mystical and paranoid. Perhaps true, but the script and portrayal lagged and failed to keep my attention.

I did watch it all the way through, hoping some revelation would make it worthwhile. Nope. And just when I thought it was over, there's more. An accurate documentary by someone say like Ken Burns would certainly be a better use of your time, and 1000% more entertaining.

Coos Bay and Myrtle Point have copies of the DVD.

Movie Review: Chicken Run

Claymation makes for an interesting method for producing a film. A hapless band of chickens hopes to free themselves from their cruel owner. Periodically non laying hens are plucked from their world and promptly eaten. So the group spread eggs around to make sure no one's count goes too low.

Mel Gibson and Miranda Richardson voice characters for this film. The chickens need to learn to fly and Rocky (Gibson) claims he can teach them.

For the DVD you'll want to look in Coos Bay and Bandon and the find the VHS copes in Bandon, Myrtle Point and Coquille.

Made for TV Movie Review: Choices of the Heart: The Margaret Sanger Story

Dana Delany plays a nurse living in the 1910s. Women were protesting to get the vote and Margaret Sanger wanted women to have the right to choose when they became mothers. She created clinics that eventually became Planned Parenthood.

Obscenity crusaders felt her contraception materials were objectionable and confiscated her pamphlets and arrested the man who printed them, but she fled the country before they could jail her. She came back to fight for the right to print the material and the district attorney felt she'd committed no crime and dropped the charges.

While the history held some mild interest, the way they portrayed the story almost put me to sleep. All the interesting drama played out haphazard and very stilted. Sanger and her husband were socialists. They could have talked about that in the context of the time along with showing all the suffragette protests.

Bandon has the DVD.

Movie Review: The Commitments

It must be the national pastime to swear in Ireland. At least in 1991. Don't let it distract you one bit. This fine character drama shows the struggling side to starting a band.

Robert Arkins leads as the manager who gets the idea to create a huge ensemble to perform soul music in Dublin. He cludges together musicians and singers from a hodgepodge of sources including a newspaper ad, friends and even a drunk singing at a wedding. I loved Andrew Strong's performance as the hothead lead singer Deco. This appears to be his only film.

From beginning to end I loved watching these folks interact. Everything from the quirky braggart trumpeter to the back up singer in love with the manager, anyone could find someone or something to relate to. Even if you don't like soul music, you'll appreciate the Irish take on the genre.

Check out North Bend and Bandon for the DVD and Lakeside and Bandon for the VHS.

Documentary Review: America: Freedom To Fascism

The concepts expressed in this film are intriguing and debate provoking. Halfway through, however, the filmmaker lost focus. It explores the IRS rules regarding income taxes. No one would produce for the documentary crew any clear cut rules for the legal law that establishes we must pay income tax.

Had the film kept to that topic and clarified it's points without the conspiracy theory aspect, I might have been more convinced. I'm not sure if the failures were due to the film makers inexperience with the documentary format, or he was so focussed on his agenda that he failed to enlighten.

Many excellent points were made with referencing the constitution and legal rulings having to do with taxation. Most of them were lost in poor illustration and text appearing on screen without any voice over to place the quotes in context.

I am intrigued by the ideas expressed and think it's worth a look, but I don't take much stock in it. Powers and Bandon have copies of this film on DVD.

Movie Review: Cheatin' Hearts

Even though it's 15 years ago it's nice to see James Brolin in something. I guess maybe the idea of this film was to show the New Mexico countryside, but they coulda picked a better plot. Brolin left his wife and family to struggle while he went off to be with another woman. He comes back to bilk his wife and mother of their children out of money.

Well, it just so happens one of his daughters is getting married so he has an excuse to come make a fool of himself. It comes off as a made for TV movie. I sat there wondering when the wife character would ever get a backbone.

I did watch it all the way through. I believed the acting enough to believe the story. Maybe it was just a little too real. Too much like every day life. No reason to watch this, just look over the fence at your neighbors. I'm sure someone is cheating, screwing up lives.

Dora has this DVD on the shelf.

Movie Review: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Mendacity. Yes, these characters live their lives in denial, desperation and desire. Big Daddy expects his favorite son to get his act together and handle his life. All the women deeply wish their men cared for them in the way they expect. All the men pursue selfish ends without regard to those who love them.

Maggie the Cat (Elizabeth Taylor) just twists and poses herself in every position to be loved by her husband and his family. Paul Newman as her husband Brick just can't seem to resolve his feelings of wanting to be his own man, separate from what his father expects.

Tennessee Williams's language always draws the viewer in. You just can't help but find someone to identify with. Burl Ives dominates as Big Daddy, though it's Willaims words that give him power as much as the actors presence. I agree with the IMDB reviewer who mentioned he should have recieved acting nominations.

Movie Review: The Cave

Ok, a bunch of cave divers go underground on a scientific expedition. Of course there's a monster that infects them one by one. I've seen this movie sooo many times.

Lena Headey and Piper Perabo do their best to liven up this yawner. I like kick ass chicks and there should be more of them in films like this. The male actors just couldn't get any line out with an ounce of conviction.

Save your time and watch something else. No idea why Bandon has two copies.

Movie Review: 3:10 to Yuma

Well I am somewhat disappointed to find out this film is a remake. Though I guess one of my favorite films Movie Review The Razor's Edge, has a better remake than it's original. I didn't really intend to watch this one. The genre tends to bore me.

Russell Crowe and Christian Bale explore the nature of badness as a small town rancher helps transport a wanted man to a prison train. The two men come to an understanding over the course of the hazardous trip. The actors express the subtle shades of being human. Though one man is clearly good and the other clearly bad, we are made aware that even a bad guy loves his mama.

Crowe makes you like him and Bale brings up pity. You sit and think they're no match for each other. Until you begin to realize the subtle power Bale's character has, the quiet man with a big moral stick, that does what he says he'll do. No matter what.

Look in Coos Bay, North Bend, Dora or Bandon for this wonderful drama.

Just a couple thoughts

No review today. I've just been thinking about the reason for this blog and I thought I'd say a few words. I wanted to keep myself writing a little every day.

I think I'd addressed the issue of writing a review in college. I found it the hardest thing to do. It seemed as though I had information overload. Studios send you tons of material. You get the complete synopsis, photos, little post cards and just sundry land fill fodder.

I went to see Armageddon at a press screening but the film I reviewed was Starship Troopers. I actually paid money for that, but we had the press packets for both. Armageddon gave away count down clocks. I don't remember if they were real clocks too but I do remember they counted down to release date.

So my reviews are short and sweet both because I sort of find them tough to write and because I don't want to create more noise about the entertainment industry. Here, it's about the library.

My hubby and I are looking to update our tv because of the change over to digital. In the process we've been looking for a digital video recording option. Right now, I use VCRs. three of them for shows on at the same time.

I like the old technology and I found a benefit that I hadn't considered before. It's also a drawback but whatever. I set my recorders to catch at set times. If for some reason the network changes the schedule I see something new. A few months ago I started getting ABC's Eli Stone. It really grew on me and now I record it on purpose. If I had a dvr, it would have just avoided recording this new show because it would have changed the time of the show I wanted.

Sadly this is all coming to an end. I don't even know how I'm going to get all the shows on a dvr and they're spendy. A couple hundred bucks just to record one program at a time. Ah well, I'll live I suppose.

That's what's on my mind today.. off to the homeshow

Movie Review: Envy

I must say I'm not a huge Ben Stiller or Jack Black fan so I went in dubious about this one. Black's character rides to work with Stiller every day. His constant blather about wild inane inventions annoy Stiller to no end. So one day, Black invents a magic spray that makes dog doo disappear.

Black invites Stiller invest in his company for only $2000. Stiller's wife tells him to do it but he just continues to think how stupid the whole thing is. Black builds a giant house across the street from his friend further annoying him.

Finally Stiller can't take it anymore and loses it. Christopher Walken shows up to stirr the pot and make this already convoluted story even more annoying.

Though I think it's a real dog, I did watch it all the way through. Murry says it's because they didn't stay on the most inane scenes for very long. So you're left sitting there going.. hmmm and before you decide to switch if off, they're on to something else.

Find this DVD in Coos Bay and North Bend. There's also a VHS in Lakeside.

Movie Review: Fantastic 4, Rise of the Silver Surfer

I figured it would be just like the first one (see review below) and on that level it didn't disappoint. Same high quality acting and outstanding plot. HAHAHA PSYCH! So like guys tell me Jessica Alba is hot so if you are into that kind of thing, she's in this film.

The Silver Surfer tries to destroy the earth for his bad guy overlord. If I had a nickel for every time that happened.... ;) ok.. I didn't care any more this time than I did last. This one is a little, "there ain't no good guys.. there ain't no bad guys.. there's only you and me and we just disagree..." (Hey that's a good song.. listen to that.. forget the blah blah movie)

Anime Review: Protectors of the Universe

This Korean animated feature tells the tale of a planet of baddies who take over the planet Orion. The people from Orion seek the help of Earth. It's a very convoluted and weird film. I'm not sure why but there's a giant robot spaceship that connects to like a bullet train to save the prince and princess of Orion.

So the robot/train goes off to fight the aliens. Ugly battles, bad voice acting leave only the moderate plot as the redeeming factor. I'm not sad I saw it, I just can't recommend it to anyone else. Maybe if you want to contrast Japanese and Korean anime. We found the DVD on the new shelf in Coos Bay, though the film was made in 1983.

Movie Review: Carlie and the Chocolate Factory

Tim Burton has his moments. Though he took this film into dark arenas that just never seemed to be there in the book. Yes, the children were turned into blueberries and digitized to the size of a Ken doll. That's pretty murky concepts for kid lit. This version just creeped me out.

As Willy Wonka, Johnny Depp smarms to the children, 'Everything in here is eatable. Even the people. That's called cannibalism.' Uh.... (btw that's a vague recollection of the quote, don't shoot me if I got it slightly wrong. ) So I guess this film is about a creepy guy in a creepy candy factory. That just wasn't the impression I got when my fourth grade teacher read it to us. Back then, it thrilled and charmed.

Bandon, Coos Bay, Myrtle Point and North Bend all have copies for those of you determined to see it. Please screen it yourself before subjecting your kids to this weirdness.

Guest Movie Review: Pan's Labyrinth

Guest post by Murry

Directed and written by Guillermo del Toro this film is set in World War II era Spain. It's IMDB title (El Laberinto del Fauno" literally: The Labyrinth of the Faun) leads you to the awareness this is a Spanish language film.

The story follows Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) as she and her mother accompany her fascist military stepfather to the forest where he hunts for rebels. An entrancing insect like faerie leads Ofelia to an entrance to a labyrinth. Once inside, she encounters weird creatures. The Faun begins to counsel her on how to solve the labyrinth as she seeks an escape from the real monster, her callous and vain stepfather.

Watch the start of the film closely. You'll see a tale of a princess who was lost from the underworld. Ofelia lays at the center of the labyrinth next to a seemingly bottomless pit, blood running from her nose. The blood runs backwards, and you wonder how
did she get there? What kind of magic is this?

Dark magic to be sure. Disturbing and violent scenes illustrate the stepfather's sinister side. This film gives an interesting portrayal of life under the fascists.

if you can understand Spanish, or don't have trouble with subtitles, take the time to see this Gem.

Plenty of copies in the library system. Look in Coos Bay, North Bend, Bandon and Myrtle Point.

Movie Review: Captain Blood

Errol Flynn sure was a pretty boy. Almost as pretty as his co-star Olivia de Havilland. Do listen to the bonus features of an interview at the premier. While i enjoyed the film, the bonuses make it even more interesting.

Blood starts his life as a physician who treats men opposing King James and is arrested and treated as an enemy. He and the men he's with escape from prison just as Spanish ships arrive to capture the colony. Blood and his crew steal an attacking ship and become cooperative pirates. Each man gets a share of the plunder.

For the age, this film holds up beaitufully. Look in Myrtle Point for the DVD and Coos Bay for the VHS.

Mockumentary Review: Chalk

This film might appeal to someone. I knew they were kidding around about awful beginner teachers, but I just didn't relate. Maybe if the characters felt real and then funny stuff happened in the course of the reality. I just kept thinking, so what.

I think we all could come up with stories of bad or stupid teachers. They don't have to be at the beginning of their career to corrupt young minds. Suprise, I was a strange kid. (no really) I got together with my friend Amy in World Lit class and sang Tom Lehrer's Oedipus Rex in front of the whole class. I made holiday cards for my teachers at the same time we were reading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. So I gave that teacher two cards, One with a green faced angel. (one real one too, I just thought the green one was funny)

My high school antics are way funnier than this lame mocumentary. Wanna see some torturous teaching? Look in Bandon.

Movie Review: Bringing Down the House

Steve Martin, Queen Latifah and Eugene Levy try valiantly to save this turkey, but alas, they just don't make it. Lots of stereotypes and "ethnic" humor that tends to turn me off. Heck I think Martin's lonely white guy didn't even move past a superficial glossing.

I love the internet. I met my husband online. As is typical of Hollywood they don't understand the way things work. Anyone with half a brain knows you don't meet people at your house. Ah well.

Movie Review: All the Kings Men

Based on Robert Penn Warren's novel, this film tells the story of a rabble rousing politician who rises up the poor vote and gets himself elected governor of Louisiana. Warren based his novel on the real life of Huey Long, the charismatic depression era power house of southern politics.

Sean Penn transforms himself from a humble mayor into a man of the people. Jude Law plays his conscious. Law's character shines a light on all the dark corners his boss wants exposed. Sometimes even holding up a mirror to his own and his employers actions.

Watch the Bons Features. Though they repeat quite a bit of the film, it's really interesting how they draw the parallels between he real and fictional governors.

Look for the outstanding performances of Anthony Hopkins, Kate Winslet, and James Gandolfini.

Movie Review: Pursuit of Happiness

I have mixed feelings about this Will Smith film. Though well acted and interesting story, I come away with some concerns about the values of the real person the story is about. Chris Gardner disappointed me.

He's got a lot of chutzpah, I'll give him that. At the start of the film he's a struggling salesman trying to sell a bone density scanner that isn't quite the money maker he hoped it would be. While walking around downtown San Fransisco he happens upon a guy in a fancy sports car and asks how he got that. The guy is a stock broker and Gardner decides to figure out how to be one too.

I don't have a problem with someone wanting to get ahead, be rich even. It just he ends up in shelters with his son and instead of getting a job he takes an unpaid position interning at a brokerage firm. He sells the last of his bone density machines. to make it through the program.

Is it really the pursuit of happiness or the pursuit of wealth? Happiness is when you sleep in your own bed at night and don't stress as you fall asleep. I give credit that Gardner makes it after all his trials. I just worry that he comes close to abusing his son in the process. I worry that he forgot his primary duty, to have a safe place for his child.

Since this brought up some deep emotion, it makes for a really compelling film. See for yourself. Bandon, Coos Bay, Coquille, Dora and Powers all have copies.

Movie Review: Changing Hearts

I'm not against sad stories if they're good and heartfelt. This one depressed and confused me. I don't really care about these people and the acting coulda been phoned in from another country. Maybe the play is better.

Lauren Holly and Faye Dunaway can do a good job, I guess someone just depressed them so much they lost their will to entertain. They're patients at a cancer hospital next door to a cemetery. If you ask me, that's a crappy place for burial plots.

Documentary Review: Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony

During Apartheid blacks in South Africa were forbidden from protesting so they made up songs with mystery lyrics. Music became the underground railroad. Like in the America slave movement, quilts lead the way to freedom, in Africa songs paved the way.

I really like how you learn stuff without sitting through a boring documentary. People's moving stories come through the music. It's a nice way to learn.

Movie Review Cheaper by the Dozen 1 and 2

I'd really like to see the old one from the 40s but the copies the library has are missing or damaged. That's a real shame, because I really liked the second one of those.

These Steve Martin, Bonnie Hunt semi stinkers left me wondering what people are thinking. Yep, life is about choices and if you choose to have a big family, you choose to deal with the consequences of it. I grew up watching my friend Jessie's chaotic home life. Her mother had seven of her own and married a guy with five.

None of the chaos in the film felt authentic. It was all "move made up." Now I can cope with that if it'd entertained, but it was just a big yawn fest. I like Bonnie Hunt, I think she's pretty and interesting, but I just don't believe her when she plays someone. Ever. Sad really. I want to.

Lets take the first film and send everyone to a lake. Though it was better than the first with Eugene Levy added to the cast, it still didn't rise into a worthwhile use of your time.

Movie Review: Children of Men

In the future women stop making babies and Britain becomes a closed society that despises all people from other nations. Julianne Moore heads a terrorist organization who needs to move a girl around a heavily regulated and violent country. She enlists her former lover to get her documents and it all goes weird from there.

The youngest person in the world, who's 18 dies at the start of the film. This scary future made me think a lot about our place on the planet. It isn't ever really explained why no babies are being born or why there aren't alternatives. Science and technology survive, but people turn animalistic and closed down. It really doesn't explain that either.

They mention a pandemic, but it's all kind of vague. I would think that if there were no new people coming along a country would be happy to have newcomers. People are blowing things up, it seems without purpose. The bonus features were all about politics and philosophy of the possible real futures, but they did little to explain the holes.

All that confusion aside, the story moves along nice, the acting is top notch and it's well worth your time. Lots of violence with stuff blowing up and shooting. Look in Dora, Lakeside, Coos Bay, Myrtle Point or Bandon for this DVD.

Yay a movie all about kitties. Haru, a human girl saves the life of a cat who turns out to be the prince of a magic land ruled by cats. The king decides to make her his daughter-in-law and brings her to his castle. While there she begins to turn into a cat.

She gets help from the Cat Bureau, a mysterious organization run by a cat figurine and his helper a huge white feline, and a crow. We got action, we got adventure and we got KITTIES!

Anne Hathaway leads a wonderful cast of voice acting. Cary Elwes, Peter Boyle, and Elliott Gould voice the Cat Bureau deinzens. Watch the bonus features too.

Movie Review: Charlie's Angles 1 and 2

Lucy Liu can't bake. It amused me that the girls called what she made "Chinese fighting muffins, " but the story bit so badly after that, I just sat and thought about something else. Why women who are powerful and smart have to do stuff for men is beyond me. These girls swoon over a guy they've never met and cry when they get dissed.

The plot reminds me of an episode of the series i.e. forgettable drivel. So many more options for action adventure. Pick something less sexist and whiny.

Library: Bandon, Dora, Powers and Coos Bay

Again we have Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu as a trio of detective kick ass beauties who solve crime for a mysterious boss man. Could we get any more offensive than them "under cover" dancing around slapping their ass. Please gag me.

Oh yea, there's a plot that who cares. I didn't. I just skimmed through it. I wanted to full throttle these girls and the writer of this piece of trash.

Movie Review: Chicken Little

The only bright spot in this film comes at the end when there's a Chicken Little film within this one. The voicing by Adam West and others during that scene just made me laugh. Sadly, that's NOT the time to start the fun.

Chicken Little and his band of misfit friends discover some aliens they believe to be invading the world. This is scary and I would think not fun AT ALL for kids. The pointless meandering plot failed to show me anything to care about. It really chaps my hide when "aliens" are either cute and lovable benign creatures or scary monsters. This plot managed both and badly at that.

Murry remarked that it really shows in some of these animated films that the voice actors are not interacting during the film. They just watch the video and record their voice in a vacuum. They often never meet until the press tour after the film. It makes their performances wooden and dry.

Come on Disney/Pixar. Don't be scaring kids and breakin my kid like heart. Coquille, Myrtle Point and Bandon have copies of the DVD.
