Movie Review: The Commitments

It must be the national pastime to swear in Ireland. At least in 1991. Don't let it distract you one bit. This fine character drama shows the struggling side to starting a band.

Robert Arkins leads as the manager who gets the idea to create a huge ensemble to perform soul music in Dublin. He cludges together musicians and singers from a hodgepodge of sources including a newspaper ad, friends and even a drunk singing at a wedding. I loved Andrew Strong's performance as the hothead lead singer Deco. This appears to be his only film.

From beginning to end I loved watching these folks interact. Everything from the quirky braggart trumpeter to the back up singer in love with the manager, anyone could find someone or something to relate to. Even if you don't like soul music, you'll appreciate the Irish take on the genre.

Check out North Bend and Bandon for the DVD and Lakeside and Bandon for the VHS.
