Movie Review: Das Boot

I've stated I cannot do subtitles. I'm told from several reliable sources this film totally rocks in German. So, should you be able to handle the subs (hah always intend the pun!) please start with the German version of this fine film.

During the waning years of World War II, a German submarine crew goes on their mission with a propaganda reporter aboard. The young raw crew struggle through their missions unsure of the reason for continuing the war. They grumble about the wisdom of orders that mean certain death, yet they get on with their job.

I cannot say I enjoy "war movies" terribly much. Yet this film depicted human beings dealing with a messed up bureaucratic war machine. I think everyone can relate to that. Yes, it's a bad idea to question orders in the field. I just wonder what would happen if more thoughtful people asked what the fighting is for?

These Dogs Are Barkin !

Don Johnson chases murderers until he uncovers a white supremacist plot. I flipped through this story so I didn't pay attention to much of the details. I know Johnson gave it his all, but it didn't save the story.

Look for Tim Reid. I like him and think he makes better anything he's in.

I liked how they showed this story from different points of view, but who needs the downer of it all. I hate how people protect the bad acting people in their life. In a way it's like other films where they tie disparate people who seem unconnected.

I'd prefer a more linear style with the different views. I get less confused and annoyed.

Robert Wagner and Kate Jackson star in this lame made for TV flick. An old Hollywood starlet haunts a house where the young couple stays to write her story. The vague references to a sorcerer who helped the actress defy death and stay beautiful forever.

Wagner becomes enamored of the mythical love story between his father and the woman. He pushes his wife away and has visions of the woman. Lots of stormy scenes. Avoid this crap.

Soso Seconds, Two reviews.

Inhabitants of a small Kansas town cope with life after nuclear war devastates their community. Jason Robards stars as a local doctor. He helps as best he can, but there's little he can do.

I chose not to watch this again. I saw it years ago and it's quite graphic and depressing. Yeah, that's the point. I don't consider that as the reason for calling it merely adequate. I want things I watch to enlighten me in some measure. I'm pretty sure I knew even before this film that war devastates real people.

Dennis Quaid stars as a climate scientist who warns of an imminent weather catastrophe. This absurd film features water filling up and instantly freezing New York City. They so lost me with their action adventure special effects drivel that the only reason this isn't a dog is because the actors didn't play it campy.

It's OK as an adventure, but don't try to apply any logic to the ideas. The importance of paying attention to our planet gets so lost in this film. Thousands if not millions of people die and what are we all supposed to do? Clap at the end? Not me.

Movie Review: Crime Broker

Jacqueline Bisset plays a no nonsense magistrate who arranges thefts in her spare time. She contracts with criminals who perform the acts she carefully plans. Her bad guys don't always follow her instructions to the letter and this makes a mess for her to try and clean up.

A Japanese policeman, Masaya Kato, finds her out and blackmails her into taking on a big score. He kills the guys she was working with and arranges that she'll be blamed for the murders.

Made for TV in Australia, it held my attention throughout. I liked it much better than some of the American made crime dramas. Bored smart people strike me as really dangerous. It went directions I didn't expect and kept me watching.

Movie Review: A Day Without a Mexican

This film explores what it would be like without any Mexicans in California. It's fake documentary style mixed with regular drama. The political message amused my liberal sensibilities.

I've heard people gripe about "multi-culturalism" like it's a dirty concept. Honestly, I love different people with different ways. If for for the food alone, I'd be a fan. But there's so much more. Country music came over as a blend from Africa and Ireland. Which strikes me as funny as many southern state American's consider it unique to this country.

The story revolves around a few stories where Mexicans become essential and when they don't show up for work, people stress. Crops don't get picked, children are left unattended and construction stops.

Check out the DVD from Coquille. Gather some friends around, watch and have a discussion.

Documentary Review: A Decade Under the Influence

This series of programs speaks with actors, directors and producers on the topic of film in the 1970s. It's really neat seeing all these people talk about how the end of the Hollywood studio system changed every aspect of film making.

I really liked what Ellen Burstyn said about the roles for women. She didn't want to portray common place rules. She wanted to take chances and do something beyond the mother, the whore or the wife.

The decade became a crossroads. Directors like Peter Bogdanovich explored sexuality and Robert Altman used his new freedoms to make a movie of the insanity of war.

This decade also explored the black experience with acting by Pam Grier and commentary on films like Shaft. In addition to the Italian American stories related to the mafia as told through Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather series.

Gather some adult friends and have a look at this interesting documentary. Bandon and North Bend both have copies of the DVD.

Double Dog Day!

Wow, I didn't realize this Kevin Bacon was so new. Man, this violent dog of a flick left me wondering what I am doing watching almost all the library films. Bacon plays a family man with a great job and two active teenage sons.

A bunch of hoodlums kill his older son in front of him and dad goes on a revenge spree. The baddies fight back and go after his wife and other son. I don't think the world works the way this 2007 film portrays. I don't think cops are quite so hostile to crime victims and quite so forgiving when they go on killing sprees.

I wonder what some films want us to think about the world. I realize Coos Bay is far away from the "big city," but it's just not as scary out there as some want you to think. Turn away from these scare tactics.

I have NO IDEA why the system has two copies. Dora and Bandon both have copies of the DVD.

Enjoying seeing her on Dancing with the Stars? Have a look at a young Cloris Leachman. She plays a fact checking housewife who gets picked for a jury. She finds herself suspecting her husband killed the woman. Nick Nolte plays the man charged, the husband of the murdered woman.

This made for TV film just doesn't raise to the level of good entertainment. We see her husband kill the woman in the beginning. So when she starts to suspect, we don't care. Maybe the style of the day exposed everything then let us guess how it would work out. This ain't Columbo.

Agatha Christie Films

Some say Peter Ustinov epitomizes Hercule Poirot. I felt he left his characterization half done. None of the leads impressed me terribly much. We get a nice splash of Bette Davis, Mia Farrow and Angela Lansbury.

The director positively squandered David Niven's talent. Maybe he should have played Poirot? Would it have mattered? No. I think they just failed to put energy into the script. The sites seemed staged and unreal.

All the slight of hand showed and I figured out who shot who pretty quick. Ah well, love this kind of stuff? Head to Myrtle Point for the DVD.

David Suchet makes a far better detective than the above lead. Though the story plodded along. A blackmailing lady dies on a plane trip. This whodunit. teased my brain and I didn't figure it out. I think more of a script that does a good job of distracting me.

TV Series Review: Cracker

NOT the Brit version, which I have not seen. Maybe that's why I liked this well enough. A psychiatrist with his own mental problems helps the police solve murders. We've all seen this kind of thing. Someone who has the brains to profile and observe behavior. This show just has the person be a shrink rather than a cop.

We see him struggle with his wife and kids and generally mess up his life. I like Robert Pastorelli and Carolyn McCormick (the Mrs). I think they both do a good job of getting me into their characters.

My problems come when after a few episodes it's clear this guy just can't find happiness. His job has nothing to do with that. He just refuses to stop using people like doormats. Sometimes lack of self awareness can entertain, other times, it's just pathetic to watch. It wasn't long before I started to turn away in disgust.

So this starts out good and degrades into dull. Bandon has the DVD of the series. If you check it out, pay attention that the DVDs are two sided. I had to go back and watch some episodes.

Dave Chappelle

I'm a little confused about the Dave Chappelle situation. I thought I had reviewed his TV show but I looked and didn't find it in my archives. So this is more or less a commentary on his comedy special, but I'll link to his show as well. It has some very similar elements.

Dave Chappelle loves to compare and contrast black and white philosophies in a funny way. He speaks from his heart and draws silly conclusions. He's definitely not for everyone, and he uses a lot of profane language and situations in both his comedy specials and show.

I enjoy the different point of view. Sometimes he goes really far but I find he brings me back to his point. He'll say something woefully sexist, but he's only making a point. Give him the benefit of the doubt and wait till the routine comes back around.

Some of the shows really made me laugh. Like with Wayne Brady who has a reputation of being super nice, takes Dave on a drug filled shooting spree. Try and put yourself in the point of view of the people doing these comedy routines. They use absurdity to make points.

Two disks of the Chappelle's Show and the comedy special are in Bandon.

Movie Review: Stardust

Both Murry and I liked this film enough to call it a Gem. Though it's a bit on the edge, closer to good than great. Michelle Pfeiffer plays an old witch who eats the hearts of fallen stars. Claire Danes falls from the sky because the King throws his gem into the air and knocks her down.

It feels a lot like a Narnia like story with mysterious worlds abutting our reality. A young man sneaks across the wall seeking adventure and finds a beautiful woman he hooks up with. He then returns home and nine months later a baby is delivered to him. When he grows up, the son also goes on an adventure to the strange land. He meets up with the star and they fall in love.

Sub plots make some of the story convoluted. I didn't mind though. Each element added to the main story. The king's children are chasing the gem that the knocked the star from the sky, the witch is chasing the star so she can eat her heart and the boy and star run afoul of some sky pirates led by Robert De Niro.

No, I couldn't make this stuff up, but I'm glad someone did. Coos Bay, Bandon, Myrtle Point and North Bend all have copies of this DVD.

Double Dog Day

How droll. Men like sports and fear commitment. Women dream of wedding plans and quit having sex just after the cake cutting ceremony. Eye roll.

Plenty of the relationship stereotypes play out in people's lives, just not all of them and not like they do in this film. The depths of stupid jokes made me angry at Dave Barry. Stick to newspaper columns dude.

Sexism gets on my nerves. Combine that with bad acting and I start to regret this watch most of the films at the library plan. Ah well. Look in Bandon for the DVD.

I like Denis Leary. He almost managed to pull this out of the dog category. I'll give him a nod for effort. Alas, again with the sexism concept. Oh well. Elizabeth Hurley plays a lawyer that will give Leary's dawg character money if he'll get 12 women to forgive him.

She picks the women and they go on a road trip together to talk to these ladies. He learns stuff about himself, but doesn't really quite get over his universal pig attitude. Though it was funnier than the other film.

Danielle Steel list

Craptastic romance between widow Melissa Gilbert, and divorced Brad Johnson. I agree 100% with the IMDB reviewer who said that Gilbert needs to stop trying to do accents. She's terrible at them. She's supposed to be a French woman and comes off sounding Russian.

The convoluted story seemed trite and contrived. The widow sits and wallows in her own distress on the same beach with the painterly morose Matt. Her daughter brings them together.

John Ritter and Polly Draper live in the same neighborhood, work at the same film studio and drive interesting vintage cars. Yet, they don't meet until after she's single. Her husband makes it clear he doesn't want to have anything to do with babies and Draper's character finds herself pregnant. She decides that keeping the baby is more important and her husband leaves her.

I enjoyed the acting and plot a lot more with this one. Still not great, but if you want to watch a made for tv movie, have a look.

An older couple lose one of their twins and Scott Baio has trouble with his wife cheating and getting pregnant with another man's child.

I found the mixing of the various stories too scattered to really entertain me. It all seemed forced, with fake drama. Resentments and stresses don't go away as easy as this story implies.

Movie Review: Cyrano de Bergerac

José Ferrer stars as the lead and won himself an Oscar back in 1951. It feels like a morality play with melodramatic language, fighting and acting. I didn't really like the style so my rating reflects what others consider "great."

Everything in black and white made the fight scenes seem especially dark. Our hero never gets winded and always makes long speeches as he routs hundreds of men. The fake nose looked stupid.

Ok, maybe I should stop and just give the links. It was a few months back I watched this and I didn't like it as well as others. Choose for yourself. SWOCC has the DVD and a VHS copy. Check Coos Bay for another tape version.

Movie Review: I, Robot

In the near future, Will Smith, finds himself frustrated with the over mechanized world around him. He distrusts the personal robots everyone owns. When his friend, robotics scientist Dr. Alfred Lanning, dies under mysterious circumstances, Smith suspects the technology.

During the investigation, we learn that one of the robots saved Smith after an accident. It left a little girl to die and our hero has a bad case of survivor's guilt. A demolition robot tries to kill him at Lanning's house. He convinces himself that technology is out to destroy humanity.

I wouldn't call this a deep thinkers film. Lots of crashy blow up scenes done in CGI. However, enough of a plot came through to hold my interest. I like all the little moral dilemmas. Who to rescue, who to leave to die, who's alive and who's an inanimate calculator.

Definitely a popcorn munching edge of your seat adventure. Look in Coos Bay or Myrtle Point for this good DVD.

HBO Series Review:Deadwood

NOT FOR CHILDREN! You may learn a few choice words and see simulated sex and violence that would offend the most seasoned viewer. HOWEVER, the plot, acting, set design draw you in so deep you wont want to turn it off.

Timothy Olyphant stars as a hardware merchant who comes into the unregulated territory of Deadwood. His partner played subtly by John Hawkes, hope to make money selling mining supplies.

Saloon owner, Ian McShane, plots with hotel owner, William Sanderson, to control all the action within Deadwood. Their actions end up causing the death of several townsfolk in the first few episodes. Plots and subplots abound. Though it's clear who has honor and who should be avoided.

Being a non western fan, any series that gets me to sit for hours waiting for the next intrigue, has to be great. Look for Season one in both Coos Bay and Bandon . Find season two in Baondon alone.

Day Four, Double Post Week

Winona Ryder and Joseph Fiennes investigate insurance claims for "high risk" folks who do dumb things. Supposedly the Darwin Award is for people who improve the human race by getting themselves killed.

Of course these two are going to clash and then get along. A student filmmaker is following around Fiennes telling the story. Ryder isn't afraid of some risk, whereas the lead is overly prissy and Monk like, though no where near as entertaining.

Oh the Fiennes character passes out at the site of blood. He allows a serial killer to escape at the beginning of the movie. Yeah, like I buy that. Eye roll. It's like watching CSI: Three Stooges.

Not funny enough for parody, not real enough to be dramatic. Check out Bandon for the DVD.

Everything Lynch writes is weird, convoluted and confusing. Welcome to the inland empire. A group of actors becomes involved in a curse production from a Polish writer.

I didn't catch a lot of the sub plots, because they were subtitled. But the lead, Laura Dern, starts identifying deeply and becoming her character. Day Three, Double Post Week

I feel conned out of two hours of my time. Dustin Hoffman plays this crazy mean old crime boss who works with con artist Edward Burns, to bilk a bank out of millions.

This plays out like a typical steal from greedy bastards justifies cheating people out of money kinda films. Nothing new and interesting here. Maybe I'm jaded, but I've seen it all before and I'm sure I'll see it again. Hoffman was so over the top as to take me out of the suspension of disbelief.

Maybe I'm not world wise, I dunno. I so totally wonder if people really acted like mob bosses in these movies, if anyone would work for them. You can get killed for the smallest slight. That's just inane. Someone would see that and walk away.

Yep, Crash, the Academy Award winning film. I didn't like it. It takes place over two days where people have trouble with a whole bunch of race politics. It all seemed to confirm stereotypes while defending the racist attitudes. That whole, "you never know how someone came to feel the way they do," plot point. I didn't buy it.

Nothing about these people drew me into the story. Every character had a weird agenda and acted in a way contrary to realistic reactions.

I didn't like the story line jumping around in time. I found it confusing. I see why they did it, but I don't think they transitioned it well. I didn't enjoy it enough for multiple watchings it needed.

Ok, I guess it says this on the box: "After five years in a prison for the criminally insane, autistic Manny returns to Reno. He moves into a motel, and takes a job as a clerk at the Hotel El Cortez. Soon Manny is caught in a labyrinth that leads to a murderous triple cross"

Somehow I missed that part in the story so I think it's worth noting that he was "criminally insane." This is one of the best performances I've seen from Lou Diamond Phillips. He really made you think. Everyone else turned in predictable and rather dull performances. We see a whole lotta conning telegraphed in their acting.

Double Review Week

I'm writing two reviews this week. Each post will have two of the same rating. Today, Monday, we're starting with two good films. Enjoy

I'm sure there are aspects of Chinese mythology that were totally lost on me. The magic mixed with martial arts held my interest for the run of the film, but I was disappointed at the outcome. Again with the unrequited love as a theme. Please.. tell someone you love your feelings as often as you can. Even if they don't return them, at least they know.

A pair of kick ass chicks and a kick ass guy fight over a special sword. They fly about and walk on water and generally defy natures laws. It's all supposed to be about their form of martial arts and that they have such power over the elements.

While we're on the fantasy bandwagon, I figured this tale of an Iowa corn farmer building a baseball field fits right in. Kevin Costner stars as farm dad turned voice hearing baseball hero. He builds a ball field in the middle of his struggling farm and goes on a road trip to goad his childhood inspiration into coming for a look at the park.

Along the way, they meet ghostly legends of the sport. James Earl Jones, Amy Madigan, Ray Liotta and Burt Lancaster round out the cast.

Hello, my nick is OiVey and I am a flake....

I guess the lack of gems from the library has gotten to me. I didn't do what I promised and I hang my head in shame. I'll do what I did last week and just give up for a few days. I'll get my act together and write a bunch next week.

I think the whole bunch of films with "dead" in the title was overwhelming. I didn't even select any from the library until like Wednesday. Going through the collection alphabetically has a disadvantage. Hopefully, there will be some entertainment when I go to pick up my holds tomorrow.

Happy Cinema.
