Documentary Review: A Decade Under the Influence

This series of programs speaks with actors, directors and producers on the topic of film in the 1970s. It's really neat seeing all these people talk about how the end of the Hollywood studio system changed every aspect of film making.

I really liked what Ellen Burstyn said about the roles for women. She didn't want to portray common place rules. She wanted to take chances and do something beyond the mother, the whore or the wife.

The decade became a crossroads. Directors like Peter Bogdanovich explored sexuality and Robert Altman used his new freedoms to make a movie of the insanity of war.

This decade also explored the black experience with acting by Pam Grier and commentary on films like Shaft. In addition to the Italian American stories related to the mafia as told through Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather series.

Gather some adult friends and have a look at this interesting documentary. Bandon and North Bend both have copies of the DVD.

p.s. I started watching the second season of Deadwood and I must reiterate my love for the program. The script while for ADULTS ONLY has poetic language when you get past the profanity. So much of the incidental conversations just ring of Shakespeare. Please grab the program at your first chance.
