Movie Review Smoke Signals

Murry and I love to watch Craig Ferguson on the Late Late Show and Sherman Alexie the screenwriter for Smoke Signals just happened to be on the other day. We'd picked up the movie a few months ago and really liked the sweet coming of age story about these two native American boys. Alexie talked a bit about life on the "rez" in his talk show appearance and it struck me as really interesting how he regarded himself as a bit of an immigrant when he came into the white community.

This shows up in the film when the two young Indians take a Greyhound bus on their cross country adventure. Their existence seems another world within America's borders. The tribal communities are not the only sub cultures that exist across the country, it just seems indian culture suffering continues to this day.

Look for Smoke Signals on DVD in Coos Bay and on VHS at SWOCC.
