Ralph Fiennes stars as Lawrence. He tries valiantly to preserve the deals he attempted to make with his Arab friends. They want independence and the British Empire wants to maintain all their strongholds. Though this plan didn't work out, it did help to erode the power of the United Kingdom.
We see his tenuous relationships start to break and falter when he cannot live up to what he promised. Ultimately returning home to self destruction and the burden of failure.
