Movie Review: Dirty Dancing

Smooth Patrick Swayze teaches demure naive Jennifer Grey how to move her body to the rhythm of the music. As a dance teacher at the Catskills summer camp like resort, he's forbidden from fraternizing with guests. But "Baby" as Grey's character is so aptly named, falls hard for the suave muscular Johnny.

Times they are a changing throughout this set in the 60's romantic drama. Women are just starting to find their place in society, and class lines begin to break down. It tackles some heady subjects even by today's standards. Johnny's pregnant by someone else dance partner has a botched abortion and Baby asks her doctor father to help the girl.

Though it might not seem so from that plot point, the film has a decidedly upbeat flair. The lead couple finds confidence in each other and they thrill on the dance floor. The film explores snobbery and assumptions between parents and their children and many levels of social strata.

I think it works as pure entertainment or social commentary.. You pick what you want to take from it. Coos Bay, Coquille, Bandon, Lakeside and Dora have the VHS tape and look in North Bend for the DVD.
